The desert town that hosted Mad Max is now attracting a different kind of visitor.

Broken Hill has appeared in more feature films, at a rate per capita, than any other Australian town. Mad Max, Priscilla, and dozens of features since. That heritage has, over the past three years, become a tourism proposition.

The Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery now runs a film-tourism programme, tying the visual identity of the town to the films shot there.

What it means for the town

Visitor numbers have grown 22 per cent since 2022. Not enormous in absolute terms, but the movement is real. Two new boutique hotels have opened. The pub restaurant scene has upgraded in a way that reflects a specific kind of visitor.

The trip

Fly to Mildura, drive three hours west, arrive at a town that in 2019 looked like it was fading. Its buildings are the same. Its self-image has changed. Both of those things, in the same place, is what makes the visit worth making.
