The Matildas' May friendlies, a three-match series against European opposition, will be played less for results than for the question of which sixteen players form the spine of the squad heading into the next major tournament.
What is settled
The goalkeeper, the captain, and three of the back four. The rest is, by the head coach's own admission, 'still in motion.'
What is not
The midfield. Four players are competing for, in effect, two starting positions. The May friendlies will, the coach said in a press conference, be the period in which the question is answered.
